Hardin Reynolds Memorial Brings Home State Officer and Five place winners from the Virginia State Junior Beta Convention Twenty six members from the Hardin Reynolds Memorial School Junior Beta Club attended the 16th annual Virginia State Junior Beta Convention held in Richmond, VA on February 19, 20, 2010. The theme this year was Beta – A Circle of Winners. Members competed in academic and talent competitions as well as in arts and crafts. Cody King, a seventh grader and the son of Larry and Penny King, is the newly elected Vice President of the Virginia State Junior Beta. This is the third consecutive year HRMS has had a Beta member elected to a state office. Students participating in the campaign skit were Cameron Tatum, Ebony Reynolds, Matthew Cassell, Lauren Smith, Cody Trent and Amber Triplett. These students earned a third place award for their skit supporting King. Students participated in seven different academic competitions: Quiz Bowl – Tyler Presnelll, Niki Plaster, Zack Overby and Tiffany McKenzie Social Studies – Kristin Harris Science – Casey Campbell Poetry – Amy Wyatt Math – Amber Triplett Essay--Jessica Hancock Speech - Isabella Glenn Poster Design – Megan Kendrick, Emily Webberson, Kaitlin Bryant and Savannah Wagoner. They also participated in various arts and crafts competitions. Using the theme, Beta – A Circle of Winners the students designed a T-shirt that earned second place. They also placed second with their banner. Working on the t-shirt and banner were Matthew Cassell, Cody King and Cody Trent. Lizzie Bullins and Brandi Wood applied the same theme for the wreath entry. Their wreath entry brought home a third place ribbon. Many hours of work and dedication went into a fabulous scrapbook that earned a second place award. Students working on the scrapbook were Regan Adams, Sydnee Burnette, Chase Cutchins, Cody King, Carly Letchworth, Alyson Nelson and Lauren Smith. Summer Catoe also entertained the audience singing "Daddy's Hands." Other entries included: Photography – color – Cameron Tatum Jewelry – Savanah Wagoner Watercolor – Hannah Newcomb These Junior Betas were accompanied by their sponsors, Kim Kendrick, Sally Tobler and Sherry Hartman, along with the school’s principal, Ann Fulcher. The students have been invited to compete with their winning entries at the National Junior Beta Convention which will be held in Louisville, Kentucky June 26 – 29, 2010. During their visit to Richmond the students had the opportunity to meet with the Superintendent of Patrick County Public Schools, Dr. Roger Morris and four School Board Members, Quinn Brim, Mrs. Annie Hylton, Bobby Mangrum and Ronnie Terry on Friday morning before their competitions. The students were encouraged to do their best and shine for Patrick County. |
